ASIVC Elections: Senate Candidates

Candidate Bio:
Hello everyone! My name is America Licona, and I'm running to be one of your ASIVC Senators. The student government should be a space where every voice is heard and valued. As a proud Latina and first-generation student, I understand the importance of representation and ensuring that our diverse campus community has a seat at every table. I've been actively involved on campus through the Latinx Association, where I've worked to celebrate culture and build connections for students like myself. I was also a member of the Public Health Research club, where I participated in various projects that focused on community health and student well-being.

Candidate Statement:
I see the Senate as a platform for real advocacy, and I am committed to listening to concerns and bringing them forward with honesty, persistence, and pride. My goal is simple: to make IVC A Place where all of us feel represented, supported, and inspired. My leadership experience in clubs and student organizations has prepared me to collaborate with others and advocate for positive change. Beyond IVC, I have also volunteered in the community, helping people in need and learning how to serve with empathy and responsibility. These experiences will allow me to represent students effectively while fostering a supportive and inclusive environment at IVC.

Hey Lasers! My name is Anjani Shaw and I am a first-year computer science major. In my free time I love doing creative hobbies like drawing and scrapbooking. My previous leadership skills at my high school include being vice president of the Visual Arts Board, an event planner for the California Youth Stem Project, and a member of the National Art Honors Society. As senator I aim to work alongside IVC’s resource center to ensure all majors are given the opportunity to explore their career path as well as bring new creative events to campus. Candidate Statement:
My favorite part of high school was an event called “Night of the Arts”, a gallery displaying the artworks from every visual arts class on campus alongside activities and food. Seeing how an event could bring so many people on campus together inspired me to get involved and join the Visual Arts Board, which planned this event, as well as become its Vice President in my senior year. At Irvine Valley College, I see similar events such as the De-Stress Fest and Welcome Week have the same impact on the campus by bringing students together. I want to contribute to growing the community at IVC as an ASIVC Senator, so that we can continue inspiring and motivating each other to successful futures.

Hey IVC!! My name is Coral Santos, I am a first year IVC student and majoring in natural sciences, and I am running to be one of your new ASIVC senators!!! I am 18 years old and two years from now I hope to transfer to UC San Diego or even USC. My hobbies include, taking walks with friends, reading, watching movies and shopping. As a candidate for senator, I hope to advocate for any and all who want their voice to be heard. I hope to get the chance to be elected so that I can begin this amazing opportunity of planning and careering out events and also listening to all your comments and suggestions for any positive change to come to IVC.

I am interested in running for a senate position for ASIVC because I think this is great opportunity to get involved with the community. I also believe that this opportunity would be a great way to utilize and grow my leadership skills and creative mind skills. My name is Crystal El-Abed, and I am a second-year Political Science major at IVC with a concentration in pre-law. This year, I serve as President of the Pre-Law Society and as the founder and president of The Student Voice club. In these roles, I am working to amplify student perspectives, create opportunities for dialogue, and build a foundation for meaningful action on the concerns students share. I look forward to using these experiences to contribute to ASIVC in a positive and impactful way!

I am interested in running for a Senate position because I believe student government should be a space where voices are not only heard, but also acted upon. By founding The Student Voice club, I demonstrated my commitment to uplifting student perspectives and creating opportunities for dialogue. As a senator, my goal is to ensure these perspectives translate into meaningful changes that benefit the entire IVC community. I want to serve as a bridge between student concerns and effective solutions that make our campus stronger. I am committed to dedicating this year to turning ideas into results and building a more connected and empowering environment for students.

Hello, my name is Ethan Garcia! I am a Freshman studying in the Business field. I've lived in Irvine all my life and I can say that IVC is one of the places that makes it great! I am a Mexican First-Generation student who likes filmmaking, volleyball, and dancing. I can connect well with anyone. I also enjoy exploring different disciplines such as student advocacy, government, and business. Additionally, I seek meaningful things like helping others, solving problems and making IVC enjoyable for everyone here.

Candidate Statement:
It’s in the name—COMMUNITY college. This is the community where I grew, where my peers grew, and where we now have the chance to build something great and leave it better than before. I am interested in running for the Senate position for ASIVC because I understand that getting involved with student advocacy means I will create an environment where both students and leaders can voice issues that are unheard, misrepresented, or singular to create a well-being as college students. My interest for Senate started when I found a group of people with disabilities who were like myself struggling with getting the right help, representation and equal opportunities; therefore I wanted to become a Senator to learn the necessary skills to build a foundation that I can use whether it's creating a movement for more resources, or developing leadership skills so I can make decisions in other areas of life. Another reason I am interested in ASIVC is because I get to connect with a wide variety of people that I wouldn't have gotten the chance to if it weren't for this.

Hey everyone! my name is Haroon Syed and I'm a Business Economics major at IVC. I'm currently the Vice President of the Real Estate Club, where I've enjoyed working with students and building connections on campus. Throughout my time at IVC, I've come to understand the needs of students and how important it is to make their voices heard. I've also previously run for ASIVC, and that experience has truly strengthened my commitment to student leadership. As Senator, my goal is to support you all and help create a stronger, more connected campus community.

I am running for ASIVC Senate because I care deeply about the student experience at IVC and want to ensure every voice is represented. During my time here, I’ve had the privilege of taking on meaningful leadership roles, such as serving on the Honors Program Student Council and as Vice President of the Real Estate Club. These roles have allowed me to connect with students from diverse backgrounds and gain a better understanding of the challenges they face both inside and outside the classroom. These conversations have shown me the importance of leadership that listens and works to meet the needs of the entire student body. Through my ASIVC campaign last semester, I had the amazing opportunity to connect with hundreds of students across campus and gain valuable insight into student leadership, which has further strengthened my commitment to serving the IVC community. I am interested because I'm looking to be a leader of some sort on campus and I want to be involved in the student center to help others find their way on campus. I also want to be able to make new friends and be a helping hand in the community. Being able to help others is my forte, and as a member of the honors program I would like to be there as a mentor for those who need a bit of assistance. Working in a group is something I'm good at, and being able to coordinate is a valuable skill I have.

I'm a biology major passionate about community health and wellness, with aspirations to become a physician. Hi! My name is Nick Ahmadi, and I am currently a first-year student in Business Administration! I am interested in finance, and plan on working in wealth management or investment banking after completing my four-year degree. Outside of class, you can find me lifeguarding or trying a new restaurant with my friends. I am so excited to see what I can do for the student body of IVC!

Candidate Statement:
ASIVC is an excellent way for us as students to get what we want out of IVC. I am a firm believer in the common saying, "You get out of your college experience what you make of it." Community college students may feel like there is no purpose in getting involved because they plan to transfer out or pursue career endeavors in one or two short years. I want to run for Senate because I want to show these students that there is purpose in getting involved and speaking up for how they feel, so that they can further their college experience. I am passionate about speaking out for what is right, and the Senate position for ASIVC can elevate my passion.

Hi, I'm Sushanth, a first-year student exploring STEM majors. I served on Student Forum in high school and I'm ready to continue that student leader journey at IVC through becoming a Senator. Fun Fact: I have polydactyly (I was born with 12 fingers).

I'd love to serve my IVC students and greater community by becoming a ASIVC Senator. Everyone chose to to pursue their education here, and I think that creates a unique opportunity to cultivate a spirit of student unity, which I'd like to be a part of. I'm eager to support student voices, and I believe I'm ready to be that peer that anyone can turn to for help navigating campus issues. Hi! My name is Trina Truong, and I am a first-year student here at Irvine Valley College! I am currently majoring in Biology in hopes of becoming a Physician Assistant. I chose this path because I have always been passionate about healthcare and making a real difference in people's lives. For me, college isn't merely about building a strong academic foundation, but also about growing as an individual, a leader, and contributing to the community around me. By serving in ASIVC, I hope to amplify students' voices and help create an environment filled with support, inspiration, and a community where everyone feels they belong.

Candidate Statement:
I am interested in running for a Senate position for the Associated Students of Irvine Valley College because I am very passionate about advocacy and being a voice for others. I've had prior experience in advocacy as a past ambassador for the nonprofit Girls Inc., where I was able to conduct presentations about financial literacy to several middle schools and at the annual Gala. As an ambassador I was also a voice and representative of girls of Orange County. We learned about different issues and worked on advocacy projects. I was also part of my high school's class council, which also involves being able to represent different voices and the study body.

Hello! My name is Alex Brown, and I'm a Business Economics major at IVC. Some things I enjoy doing are hanging out with friends, practicing violin or piano, and playing tennis. I hope that with my inclusion in the ASIVC Senate I'm able to bring a difference to the community of IVC by helping spread not only my ideas, but advocating for others that may feel like their voice isn't heard. I hope to get to know you guys!

Candidate Statement:
The main reason why I am interested in running for a Senate position for ASIVC is because I want to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. In every other school that I have attended, I never made an effort to apply for any leadership positions due to a multitude of reasons, namely shyness and fear of failure. However, now that I am in a new environment, I want to give myself a chance to get comfortable with getting outside of my comfort zone and make a greater effort to become someone who can make a difference in my community.

Candidate Bio:
I am a second year at IVC. I'm a double major in Political Science and Economics, two fields that I'm very passionate about. I am very involved on campus, being on the board of multiple clubs and an active member of others. In my free time, I love working out, reading, and spending time with my dog. I hope to be able to give back to the college and help create an active community here at IVC.

Hey everyone! My name is Dante Ghazizadeh. I'm running for ASIVC Senator because I believe that with the experience I've gained here at IVC, I can help bring positive change to this college. Community colleges are generally known for lacking social life and community compared to 4-year universities. Many of us who go to community college might simply want to get our degree and transfer out as fast as possible. That was originally my plan, as I planned to be a one-year transfer student last year. However, I decided to stay another year to double major and get more involved in the IVC community, and I am extremely glad that I made that choice. In my second semester, I started getting involved with many clubs at IVC, such as co-curricular clubs such as Speech and Debate and social clubs such as Iranian Student Association. Now, I am on the board of multiple clubs, such as Amnesty International, Mock Trial, and College Dems. This has given me a lot of involvement with leadership and allowed me to get involved with the community, and I hope to get more people involved with the community so we can continue to grow.

Hey Lasers! My name is Cindy Phan, and I'm studying computer science at IVC. On campus, I serve on the boards of MedAI, Girls Who Code, and CS Club, where I am active in building inclusive and supportive communities for students to grow and succeed. Off campus, I work as a medical assistant, which has taught me that true leadership is rooted in empathy and a commitment to showing up for others with both purpose and integrity, qualities I hope to contribute to the Senator position to make a positive, meaningful impact at IVC.

I am interested in running as a Senator for ASIVC because I believe in promoting student success and inclusive representation across campus. In addition, I strongly believe everybody deserves a voice which is why I’m determined to empower our student body and leave a lasting positive impact at Irvine Valley College. I am interested in running for ASIVC Senate because I would be committed to cultivating a fun and engaging student experience at Irvine Valley College. I also aim to be a direct voice for my classmates! I am eager to contribute to a more vibrant campus community by initiating and planning out school events that foster connection with one another. This role would be a way for me to contribute back to IVC and construct an environment i know i would be happy to arrive at.

Hi everyone! I'm a second-year Honors student studying Neuroscience and Psychology. I have extensive experience working with neurodivergent and disabled students/peers at IVC, IUSD, and Stanford, so I plan to use that experience to advocate with this community for inclusivity and belonging on campus! Outside of that, I'm deeply empathetic and passionate about equity in learning, which applies to every student! IVC is such a diverse place, so I plan to raise the voices of each community on campus to raise awareness for challenges, propose reforms to increase inclusivity, and foster an overall sense of belonging!

Candidate Statement:
As an advocate for inclusion and belonging, I strongly believe in the idea of universal design, the idea that making a product, service, or environment more accommodating or accessible to the most diverse extent possible will improve the experience for all users without the need for specialized adaptation. The diversity at IVC exemplifies how each student brings a unique background, baseline, and access to resources to the school, which shapes my belief that student support requires acknowledging these differences, uplifting each student's strengths, and challenging their weaknesses. As a transitional step in most students' careers or education, it is difficult for many students to feel a sense of belonging, which is crucial for cultivating an inclusive environment and promoting the success of many students. I plan to work with the Events and DEIA committee to create an environment where students feel a sense of belonging and have the support they need to succeed, ultimately enhancing campus culture and student engagement.

I believe that leadership means to serve and listen to students’ voices, so I am dedicated to represent the needs of student, support campus initiatives. Hello Lasers! My name is Dylan Brady and I am a first year student from Canyon High School in Anaheim. I intend to transfer to a 4 year university after getting my GE's done here. I love my friends, music, and all things space and engineering related. I am extremely excited to work hard this school year, hopefully being able to make a difference as a senator!

Candidate Statement:
I want to be a senator for a few main reasons. Most importantly, I want to be able to make a difference in my community, and see that difference in action. Senatorship would give me the priviledge to enact change at a much larger magnitude than I have ever had the priviledge of having. I guarantee that I will do my best to listen to the very people that I represent, enacting policy on their behalf, as I would hope would be done for me. Lastly, I intend to learn and grow as much as possible if I do get the position, and I intend to use what I have learned to further benefit the student body!

Over the past few years, I’ve been deeply involved in the Orange County community and local politics, which has inspired me to get involved with ASIVC. Hey guys, my name is Solomon, and I’m a first-year student at IVC. In high school, I served as Senior Class Vice President, where I gained experience leading and collaborating with others. Outside of school, I like playing volleyball, working out, listening to music, and spending time with friends. I’m excited to continue growing, meeting new people, and getting involved here at IVC.

I’m interested in running for an ASIVC Senate position because I want to play an active role in shaping the student experience at IVC. Hi, this is Jingyi. I’m a first-year Studio Arts major at IVC. I'm also a media artist with a growing portfolio of digital and traditional work, and my art background has already helped me earn admission to programs such as the Art B.A. at the University of Waterloo. I’m excited to bring creativity, openness, and new ideas to ASIVC, and I look forward to serving our community.

I am running for a Senate position because I want to help make IVC a more creative and welcoming place for every student. With my background in Studio Arts, I hope to bring new ideas, such as student art exhibitions and cultural exchange events that allow us to learn from one another. As an international student, I also want to represent diverse voices and encourage more collaboration across our community. My name is Joseph Bui and I'm a second year attending IVC as a psychology major. I'm super passionate about meeting new people and trying out new experiences especially when building a strong sense of community here on campus. Outside of my studies, I love practicing my colorguard skills in my free time as I used to do it as a hobby back in high school as well as traveling to new places whenever I can. I hope to represent the student body as one of the senators at ASIVC to make this a more engaging and inclusive college for everyone.

I want to be able to advocate for a stronger, more connected student life for the many students that attend this community college as a whole. My goal as a senator is to help create more opportunities for students to grow academically and personally through engaging with one another through the various events, clubs, and campus activities. I want to try my hardest to make sure that the voices of the students at IVC are heard throughout this process and that this is a campus where they always feel welcomed. Hello! My name is Evan Garcia, and I am currently a second-year Aerospace Engineering major. In my spare time, I enjoy playing drums (marching snare), playing football, and 3d printing fun creations. I believe that in the year I have been here at IVC, I have experienced and seen things that could be changed ( in specifics club help and student advocacy), and I would love to be in a position to help change these things. I am very determined to run for a senate position, because I believe I could be a great fit due to the fact that I have many fresh ideas, and I have been in many positions of leadership where people feel safe to share their issues with me. I would love to be in a position where I can help advocate for my peers and help coordinate to fix issues or improve things for the future of IVC. Many of our students aren't in a position to be able to speak about their issues, and I believe having someone who is trusted can help bring their issues to light and facilitate the process for them. I would also love to create more opportunities for clubs to grow and thrive, and I believe that as a senator, I can help get the most support for clubs by collaborating with my fellow senators to make the changes potentially happen.

My name is Aaron De Ruyter, a first year Chemical Engineering student here at IVC. If elected as your Senator, I pledge to bring what no other politician can: unalienable, unrivaled, and unsolicited honesty. What I lack in scholastic leadership I more than make up with my loose moral compass and undeniably questionable ethics. Under my guidance IVC will prosper - and who knows, the students might even benefit somewhere in the process!

I am interested in running for a position as Senator because I envision contributing as an active participant in student life here at IVC. Serving as a senator would allow me to utilize my prior experience in leadership to meet and connect with others in an organized school medium. It would give me the opportunity to be involved in events that I wasn’t able to take advantage of in high school as well as a chance to shape the school that I would be remiss to pass up. As a senator I would be in a prime position to influence the school campus , and learn how to be the best student I could possibly be.

By involving myself in different clubs, extracurriculars, and fields of study, I hope to get to know you all on a deeper level and accurately represent the diversity in our student body. What's up, lasers! My name is Vanessa Tran, and I'm a first-year psychology major with dreams of becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I deeply value diversity, representation, and creating spaces where every student feels seen and supported. As senator, I hope to work on bettering our campus by advocating for ideas that bring us together and create positive, meaningful change. I’m interested in running for a Senate position with ASIVC because I want to be a voice for students and ensure that everyone feels a true sense of belonging on campus. My biggest targets are visibility and accessibility—making resources easier to find, the campus more approachable, and the community more welcoming. As a first-year, I’ve personally experienced how taxing the transition from high school to community college, and later to a university, can be, and I want to help ease those worries. I also hope to create more opportunities for students to spend time on campus, build connections, and strengthen our sense of community. I believe student government is a powerful way to bring people together and create positive change that reflects our diverse community; as a senator, I’m looking forward to the opportunity to do just that.

Hi my name is Ilya Chepelyuk, I am a Political Science major and this is my first semester here at IVC! I am hoping to transfer to a four year university and then attend law school after I graduate. I love helping people out and just generally meeting new people from all different kinds of backgrounds and cultures. I am an immigrant as I was born in Russia and lived there for eight years after which my family and I immigrated here to the United States where I have been for ten years. I am very excited and passionate about running for Senate and to be in a position to help the students here at IVC so they have the best possible experience at this college.

Candidate Statement:
I feel very passionate about joining student government because I wish to get more involved with IVC in any way I can, especially since a Senate position for ASIVC gives me the opportunity to help the students here at IVC have an easier and all around more joyful experience. I am especially passionate about helping students that may be foreign to the U.S. and come to study abroad or maybe students who just recently settled in the U.S. and are learning the language/culture here. My older brother attended IVC over a decade ago when he moved here alone and had a very hard time as he was new not only to the language but to the country as a whole, which had a tremendous impact on his personal and academic life. My goal is to make sure that foreign and newly immigrated students are given the upmost resources not only so they can succeed but also feel comfortable during their time at IVC. I hope that being in a Senate position at ASIVC allows me to achieve those goals and make sure that all students at IVC, especially those who are just coming to the United States, can succeed in the pursuit of their dreams.

Hi! My name is Lili, and I’m a freshman psychology major at IVC with a passion for social-cultural psychology and the arts. As your senate candidate, I want to focus on making campus life more convenient, accessible, and student-friendly. From improving communication about construction delays and bookstore issues to advocating for more flexible event times and faster club paperwork, I believe small changes can make a big difference in our daily lives. I may not be able to fix everything, but I’ll work hard to make things as clear and straightforward as possible for all students.

Candidate Statement:
I’m interested in running for a Senate position because I want students at IVC to feel more connected and heard. In high school, I saw how student government often lacked impact, and quite frankly felt like a clique at times. But I believe that here, there’s a real opportunity to make a difference. I want to be someone students can come to with their concerns, especially those who may be too shy to speak up. I want to be the person that anyone can come to and voice their concerns. I don't plan to fix everything but I can relay information and at least remove the communication barrier so many people feel towards the student government. For me, this role is about building a stronger sense of community and making college feel less disconnected and more like a community.

Hi! My name is Aleeza, I am 16 years old and a first-year biology major on the pre-med track, and I am very excited to run for ASIVC Senate! I am passionate about making sure every student’s voice is heard and represented. As Senator, I will advocate for student concerns and work hard to ensure that our needs and ideas shape the future of IVC. I am committed to helping develop and implement impactful ASIVC-sponsored programs and events that bring our campus together, promote student success, and create opportunities for growth both inside and outside the classroom. My goal is to serve as a strong, approachable representative who listens to students and turns their concerns into action. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with friends, listening to music, drawing, baking, and watching shows! I would be honored to earn your support and represent you as Senator. Candidate Statement:
I am interested in running for a Senate position with ASIVC because I want every student at Irvine Valley College to feel heard, supported, and represented. As a first-year student, I understand how important it is to have opportunities that make college feel welcoming and engaging. Serving in the Senate will allow me to advocate for student concerns, share ideas with the Academic Senate, and help create programs and events that strengthen our campus community. I want to focus on improving student life by making resources more accessible, building a stronger sense of connection, and creating new opportunities for involvement. My goal is to represent students with honesty, energy, and dedication while working to make IVC the best it can be!

Hello hello hello!! My name is Tomiris Turgumbaeva and I’m a first year student in IVC. I am a big fan of all animated content, and an animator myself. I also love be in communities and participate in big talking involved projects. I’d love to do something important at IVC with ASIVC!

ASIVC represents interests of all IVC students, and it is crucially important. Associated students have to notice and highlight any concerns to the Academic Senate, which is something that I would love to do. Also I feel very confident with organisation any types of events, since creating them is a very big deal in my family and culture.

Hey everyone, my name is Eric Shin. I'm a first year political science major who's passionate about political economy and theory. At IVC, I'm a debater on Speech and Debate, delegate on Model United Nations, and a member of the Honors Program Student Council. I look forward to running for senate, and getting the voices of students heard in order to promote student success and welfare. Thank you!

Candidate Statement:
I’m interested in running for Senate because I want to enter the world of politics during my time at IVC. While IVC may be a small, community college, there are over 17,000 students whose voices should be represented by ASIVC. Running as a senator will encourage me to understand the perspectives of students, all from different backgrounds, and apply that to my campaign; much like how actual politicians should in their campaigns. And for me personally, IVC has been an amazing second chance for higher education. I want to make sure that other students experience the same life-changing opportunities and community I had, making IVC even better.
